Poker hand rankings (Texas Hold’em)
In Texas Hold’em you always compare the best 5 cards each player can make with their 2 hole cards and the 5 community cards. You can use 2, 1 or none of your cards.
From best to worst. What always counts is the best 5-card hand you can make from your 2 cards and the 5 community cards.
- Straight flush
- Four of a kind
- Full house
- Flush
- Straight
- Three of a kind
- Two pair
- One pair
- High card
Kickers and ties
If two players have the same category, you compare the card that defines it and then the remaining ones ("kickers"). Example: on a board of the hand beats : both have a pair of aces, but the king beats the queen as a kicker.
If the best 5 cards are identical, the pot is split. This happens, for example, when the board already makes a straight that nobody improves. Suits do not break ties in Texas Hold’em.
