Set mining

What it means

Calling preflop with a small or medium pocket pair looking to flop a set (or better), which happens 11.8% of the time, to win a big pot. It depends on implied odds: deep stacks, an opponent who pays off and nobody behind squeezing.

Example

You call 2.5 bb with against an HJ open: if you hit a set, you want to win much more than you paid. With short stacks or frequent squeezes behind, the call becomes less attractive.

Also called: Set-mining · Jugar al set
